358: Janelle Monae, plus Hozier and Jungle

September 24, 2023

The Anthem, Washington, DC

Week: 358

This week’s thing: I spent three nights at the Anthem this week but will focus this post on the Janelle Monae show. I missed Janelle last time she was in DC and some friends who went said she was amazing, so I made sure to fly back home from Boston on a flight first thing this morning to make it to her concert this time around.

Music: 4/5: We got songs from the many different eras of Janelle Monae, all of which I like. I do think hearing some of the songs from Android made me really wish I was at that tour. I just think those songs are unmatched by the rest of the Janelle Monae catalogue, including the new album ”Age of Pleasure.” Her voice was in top form.

Lighting/backdrop/visuals: 5/5: Super elaborate sets and staging throughout the show which exceeded my expectations. Huge screens, which in a venue like the Anthem really makes the show feel so big and so intimate at the same time. She brought with her a huge band with lots of horns and a big group of dancers and background singers, which I always, always appreciate.

Overall vibe: 5/5: Very joyous atmosphere in the room with people of all ages and races dancing, laughing, and singing.

Bonus points:

  • Stage banter: +1, Janelle was charming, humble, funny, and inspiring to listen to

  • Fashion: +2 for some incredible fits, including a Midsommar-esque gown and headdress covered in flowers, a Michael Jackson look with top hat and cane,

Final: 17/15

What else I saw this week:

  • Hozier, who I was able to snag a last-minute ticket to. He puts on a great show and played an excellent setlist. His voice was on point.

  • Jungle, who I first learned of from a Peloton commercial and who have become one of my most listened-to bands on Spotify. Their music is so funky and groovy and I’ll see them any chance I get.
